At the last Environment Committee of Dacorum Council, Liberal Democrat Cllr for Highfield Lloyd Harris expressed the numerous concerns from residents about the grass not being cut, but left to grow for what seemed like months.
In response the Conservative portfolio holder for environment told the committee that the council staff couldn’t cut the grass because the crews were planting flowers. That together with the rain meant the grass was left uncut for long periods of time.
Cllr Lloyd Harris said “It never ceases to amaze me how this Conservative-run council can find an excuse for everything. First we hear that they need to slash the number of flowerbeds to save money, now they can’t cut the grass because they are planting flowers. I used to love seeing the flowers in Heath Park as I drove past, they are now gone.
“The neighbourhood toilets are closed and now the grass can’t be cut for long periods. Have this administration lost sight of what the Council is there for?”
“If you have long grass in local green spaces near you, I urge you to call the Council and make a complaint on 01442 867858 or log it online at www.dacorum.gov.uk”
Yesterday I asked Dacorum Council to consider assisting small businesses with recycling. The majority of rubbish that goes to landfill comes from the business and industry, yet there is little councils is doing to solve this problem.
I am glad to report that the portfolio holder agreed with me at last night at the Dacorum Council meeting. He will look at doing a pilot project, possibly in part of the Maylands estate to provide recycling services to businesses. I will welcome this if it happens.

Both public toilets in Highfield, those at Bellgate and The Height are to be closed following a decision by the Conservative run Borough Council.

Moves to remove the old stalls in the market place near the bus station continue apace, I welcome this as the site has become tatty and with the stalls gone it can then be used for a greater range of activities.
I questioned at council though the continued use of the site of charity markets and was comforted by the response that uses such as charity markets will be considered when they look at the continued use of the site once it becomes an open square.
